Sciton BBL Photofacial

The Sciton BBL( Broad Band Light) is a light treatment that can be used to treat skin conditions associated with environmental damage and aging such as pigmentation, sun spots, redness, rosacea, broken capillaries and small veins. Long-term sun exposure and active lifestyles result in visible signs of sun damage and represent areas of the skin that can appear lighter or darker than normal resulting in an uneven tone and a blotchy, muddy or dull appearance. Sciton BBL treatment will leave your skin colour even and bright.

How does Sciton BBL work?

A BBL treatment is often referred to as a photofacial or photo-rejuvenation.  A BBL treatment is essentially the same as an IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatment.  Both of these treatments target pigmentation ( brown spots ) and reddened areas.  These targets absorb the light and there is a change from light to heat that break up the pigment so it can be exfoliated off and closes down the dilated vessels causing the redness.  Treatment leads to an even and fresher skin complexion. Regular Sciton BBL treatment also keeps skin healthy and slows the visible sign of ageing. The treatment can be performed on almost all parts of the body, but is most commonly used on the face, neck, chest and hands.   The number of treatments will differ based on the condition being treated and the patient’s desired results.  Best results are generally achieved with 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart.

What the Sciton BBL can be used for:

  • Reducing age spots/sun spots
  • Acne scar treatment
  • Rosacea treatment
  • Blushing and Flushing treatment
  • Freckle removal and reduction
  • Brightening dull skin

FAQs

What will happen during the procedure?

This treatment is typically gentle and safe.  After a skin assessment we will choose the treatment settings that are appropriate for your skin type.  Your eyes will be protected with special goggles.  When we do the treatment it will feel like a warm elastic band snapping against your skin as the light is absorbed by the targeted areas.   After the treatment is complete you may feel like you have a sunburn.  This sensation will diminish over the next 1-4 hours.

How many treatments will I need?

Generally we say 1-3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart for initial treatment and a maintenance of 1-2 a year.  Number of treatments will depend on skin condition and will be discussed at consultation.

What can I expect after Sciton BBL?

Sciton BBL requires minimal downtime as it is non-invasive.  After the procedure, the skin may temporarily be red and dark spots will temporarily appear darker.  Most redness fades in just a few hours, and any remaining pinkness will fade over next couple of days.  It is quite normal that you feel like you have had a bad sunburn for 1-3 hours after the treatment.  Patients with darker pigmentation spots may notice mild flaking or peeling of those spots 1-2 weeks after the treatment.  Makeup may be applied.  Please continue to use a good moisturizer after your treatment.

It is recommended that you avoid strenuous exercise, hot tubs, saunas and steam showers for 3 days after.  Avoid sun exposure for 4 weeks after treatment and wear sunscreen with a 30 spf.

Avoid irritants to the skin, such as Retin A, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, astringents or chemical peels for at least 5 days after.

Who cannot have a Sciton BBL treatment?

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any sun sensitizing medications.  If you are currently getting skin cancer treatment on the area where you want the BBL.
  • If you have been using self tanner we ask you to stop 4 weeks prior to your appointment.  It is important to let us know when you last used your self tanner.   Self tanning products can absorb the light used in this treatment leading to potential skin burning.
  • We ask that you stop any retinol use 5 days prior.
  • If you were on Accutane you need to wait for 6 months before a BBL treatment.
  • We cannot do a treatment on sunburned skin or recently tanned skin.  If you have been using tanning beds we ask you to stop 4 weeks prior to your treatment.  You must use proper sunscreen and avoid active tanning after your treatment.
